CHERYL TONG

Passion Music was established by Cheryl Tong who has forty years of experience in music education. Her long-term involvement is a reflection of a strong belief in the emotional and behavioral benefits that learning music can bring. She has seen both young and old enjoy the rewarding benefits that music brings to the human soul and is committed to providing an effective pathway for as many to experience this as possible.

Upon her graduation from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles eons ago, Cheryl co-founded a music business in Kuala Lumpur, a licensee of Yamaha Music, which she managed for more than a decade. Backed by a team of dedicated tutors, she oversaw hundreds of students collectively through the years. Thereafter, she moved to New Zealand, bringing with her a wealth of experience in preparing students for public performances and music exams, along with an excellent track record of outstanding results.

In her secret life, Cheryl is an author, and her latest is a series of music theory books based on the exam syllabus by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (UK), with a foreword written by renowned international conductor, George Pehlivanian, and endorsements by others in the music circle around the world. Cheryl’s teaching advantage comes from invaluable exposure to a range of approaches that encompass the best of British, American and Japanese influences, and from a background enriched by teaching both individuals and groups.

Looking ahead, Cheryl hopes to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and solutions to some of the more common issues facing fellow music educators around the world in their work with students of the new millennium.
